Memorable programs, memorable people

With an open heart in Ghana

I have long hoped to discover the remote, magical landscapes of Africa and its people. I had only imagined what life would be like there, and suddenly there I was standing in a rural school in Ghana, surrounded by teachers and children, with a smiling student in my arms. I was told that the school previously had three classes under canopies in the courtyard, but was now being extended with support from the Hungary Helps Programme. It was great to see and hear how many noble things were happening in Ghana with Hungary's help. Twenty schools will be getting benches where previously pupils used to study sitting on the floor. Two health centres are being built, which will provide care for nearly 200,000 patients, and Hungarian agricultural experts have recently arrived at a local university to pass on their knowledge. János and I also visited a wastewater treatment plant developed with Hungarian assistance, which will help two million people stay safe from diseases and will also contribute effectively to the protection of the natural environment. On my visit, I had the opportunity to experience the toils of everyday life in an emerging African country while also seeing how Hungary's humanitarian mission is helping the people of Ghana. It was an unforgettable experience for me.
