The Glory of Ancient Musical Instruments

I would never have thought that a wadaiko (Japanese drums) concert can be so intriguing and varied for hours on end. Vivacious music, captivating dynamism, diverse rhythms. The Japanese drums harking back to the ancient past, evoked the varied sounds of fighting, fierce winter or the roaring of the waves in a breath-taking manner. This was for me an encounter with a genre so far unknown to me. In the great hall of the Palace of Arts filled to the brim, the eager anticipation of the audience was soon replaced by loud applause. There could hardly have been a more impressive closing event for the memorial year commemorating the 150th anniversary of Japanese-Hungarian diplomatic relations. Wadaiko succeeds in capturing the uniqueness of Japanese cultural heritage while being at the same time attractive, as well. It is no coincidence that Hungarian musicians have also fallen in love with this special instrument and have started playing it.
